Happy Birthday, My Love |

Today is Cheryl's birthday. I'm not going to tell you how old she is, except that it's a whole lot older than you would think by looking at her.

Colorado Ethics Watch has posted more documents from the Steve King extravaganza.
Note: I had a report this morning that the link above wasn't working. There was an errant space in the URL. It works now.
Scroll down to about page 11 and you'll find King's part whiney, part defiant response to the charges against him. On page 13, you'll find the excuse that gives his advocates political cover to exonerate him. You'll find that King complains he was broke, and took a loan from his campaign fund.
Neither letter responded specifically to the charges.
The second letter is good and bad for King. It's illegal as hell to give yourself campaign money, even if you launder the money by paying it back. However, there's a 180-day statute of limitations on the offense.
What that means in plain English is that King's letter admits to things that violate the law, but he'll get off scot-free because he wasn't caught in time.
In most political campaigns, that would be the kiss of death. But the Mesa County Democratic Party is so incompetent that nobody's going to call King on it. Hell, he doesn't even have an opponent.
We'll see what happens in the next Ethics Committee hearing. My prediction? The legislators will choose to kick the can down the road, back to the campaign finance arena, where there's nothing that can be done about King's indiscretions. Then they can wash their hands of the matter.
Congratulations, Representative King. You got away with it.

Today's Daily Sentinel almost got away with perpetuating the myth that the local teabaggers, the Mesa County Conservative Alliance, are nonpartisan.
In a "Breaking News" item this morning on the Sentinel web site, the Sentinel said that, "All House District 54 candidates will participate in a forum at a meeting tonight of the Western Slope Conservative Alliance"
After a call and an email from the Daily Blog, the story was changed to, "All Republican House District 54 candidates will participate in a forum at a meeting tonight of the Western Slope Conservative Alliance. (emphasis mine)"
There was a time when the Sentinel at least pretended to be impartial.
That was a long time ago.
