Jim Bunning... |

...was a great pitcher.
He also was, and is, a complete horse's ass.
Since late last week, Bunning has been holding up a bill that grants expended unemployment benefits to hundreds of thousands of out-of-work Americans. Unfortunately, because Congress does not need to adhere to a "single-subject" rule, the bill he's blocking also funds Federal highway projects, medicare reimbursements to doctors, COBRA health benefits to laid-off people, and many other things.
Bunning objects to the bill because it would add to the national debt and there's no language in the bill that says where the money is going to come from.
On the face of it, that's a noble objection. However, once you cut through Bunning's bullshit, you'll find that Bunning last week voted against a "Pay as you go" bill in the Senate. It's kind of hard to take Bunning's objection to extended unemployment seriously when he won't apply it to each and every bill that comes before him.
Tonight, Bunning relented and said he will allow a vote on the bill in question, which is expected to get at least 70 bipartisan votes, if he can offer a meaningless amendment that is sure to fail.
Our government is broken. I'm not talking about the quaint but stupid supermajority rule. I'm talking about the fact that one asshole can completely shut down the Senate.
That needs to change.

I've worked with a lot of "spokesmen" over the years, including people who were so good at what they did that they could stand in front of a molten nuclear reactor and convince you there was no danger to the public.
It takes a certain kind of person to spin a bad story.
Today, Governor Ritter broke several ribs in a bicycle accident.
I got a press release about the incident from Evan Dreyer, the Governor's "spokesman."
The release said, in part, "The Governor is in good spirits, laughing and joking with hospital staff and his wife Jeannie."
Umm, no. When you have broken ribs, you don't laugh. In fact, it only hurts when you laugh.
Or breathe. |
