Sam Susuras took a seat on the Grand Junction City Council this week to a great deal of fanfare. Not only did he get a Sentinel editorial of welcome (despite having been repudiated by the people for a Council seat), his appointment also garnered a letter from an attorney for the Colorado Press Association questioning whether the vote to put him on the Council violated state "sunshine" law.
Nothing against Sam, he's a nice guy and a genuine good ole boy around here. But we're growing up. The same good ole boy stuff that worked in the 1950s no longer works.
Today, the City relented and disclosed who voted for whom in its election of Susuras. That's great. It even got Sam a second editorial.
But Susuras also raised some eyebrows in his first meeting on the Council, at least here on Orchard Mesa. Susuras voted for a rezone in my neighborhood that he had also voted in favor of when he was on the City Planning Commission.
Isn't the Council supposed to give each request a fair and impartial hearing? Having already opined on the rezone once, did Susuras really hear the case as an impartial observer? Having already voted on the rezone, shouldn't Susuras have recused himself?
According to a reader who attended the Council meeting, that issue was raised. The City Attorney said everything was hunky-dory.
I'm fine with Sam, he's a nice guy. But I have some real doubts about whether the City actually gives a shit about ethics or even appearances of impropriety.
Tell me about that body farm again, guys?
Note: I have been told that Sam was a member of the County, not City planning commission. No conflict. |
