Mea Culpa

March 4, 2010

I wrote some stuff on the Daily Blog yesterday that wasn't true.

Let me get directly to what it was.

1) I said that Sam Susuras had been a member of the City Planning Commission. That was wrong. He was on the County Planning Commission.

2) I said that as a member of the City Planning Commission, he had heard an application for rezone in my neighborhood. That was wrong. As a member of the County Planning Commission, he never heard that request.

3) I said that as a member of the Planning Commission that heard the rezone request, he had a conflict of interest. That was wrong. Having been on a different Planning Commission, and having never heard the rezone request, he had no conflict of interest.

I got a "mea culpa" email today from my source for the story. There was no need for that. I am the final arbiter of what appears on the Daily Blog. If I posted something that wasn't adequately fact-checked, it is nobody's fault but my own.

While I am apologizing, I got an email from the Sentinel reporter who ran the story about an attorney for the Colorado Press Association questioning the propriety of Susuras' election to the Council. That was wrong too. The attorney never wrote a letter. The Sentinel reporter actually originated contact with the attorney.

And I'm glad she did.

At least I print my retractions on Page One.
